Assault Marine

I am still around :) Wanting to finish one before I finish the rest (five still needs to be glued together!) so I see some faster progress I painted this Assault Marine. He's still a WIP but you can clearly see the idea of what I want to do. The next step is a few decals (First on his left shoulder, squad number on the top of the jump pack on the left side, thinking of seeing if I can't get a green assault marine X on the other side, but I need to find some real good tape for that. Yes, I suck that much at painting freehand:)) and then some minor weathering.

I am thinking black soot around the jump pack exhaust and some small metal chips around the edges. Some mithril silver lightly drybrushed in the black part of the exhaust as well. Maybe something more, but I want to keep it fairly "clean" if you can call that with my ad hoc yellow paint style.

This Marine is Tausept Ochre as a base, with a Gryphonne Sepia was followed by a 50/50 of Iyanden Darksun and Golden Yellow. One (!) layer of Golden yellow followed by Sunburst Yellow as highlights. I think it was just one layer at least. He's a bit darker than a few of the Tacticals, but funny enough roughly the same color as my dread (which will be finished and getting some decals when Mr. Marine gets his. I just feel reluctant to do it since I suck at it:)).

The green is a Gretchin Green with Goblin Green on top and a Scorpion Green highlight. Not much for mixing paints right now. We'll see how it goes in the future:) Oh, and the eagle on the chest is blazing orange with a baal red wash or two. Too narrow to brybrush so it was just easier this way:)

So feast your eyes on the WIP (damn I need a proper camera instead of my iPhone):

I will write more about this later, but I have a little display case now :)

And this was a little XMas present to myself. More pictures to come :)

  1. Flekkzo, how many models can be contained in each tray type? mostly infantry.

  3. @Woroxon It holds a buttload of models to say the least. I am planning to put in my Imperial Fists in it, plus more IF models, plus a full drop pod space wolves army (promised myself to finish up the IF army first). If you are interested in the army bags you can always check out http://www.battlefoam.com :) They make custom trays so you can store pretty much anything you can come up with.

@Darksol Thanks! I don't think any of my squads looks like the same since I have tried different ways of painting yellow on most of them :) This turned out with a dark but very yellow yellow. Stay tuned for more! :)

  4. Why was the trim painted green? Usually I see imperial fists that have a red or black trim.

  5. The black trim is the fifth company and red the third. I have some fifth company tacticals but wanted to play around a bit and do something different so I went with fourth company trims, i.e. green. I thought of purple and blue as well (7th and 9th) but went with green. I think it looks pretty cool :) Gives them a different feel. I'm going to paint them up to be the 7th squad and I might add an 8th squad as well as a Captain (guess which Captain has a jump pack and gives fleet:)).

Going to give my Lysander and my termies some white details to make them look like first company as well. Wish I could paint up my Land Raider worthy of such a heroic Captain :)

  6. Looking nice :) the green is a good finish on them!

Good to see a nice solid yellow :) your recipe is almost identical to mine though I only use iyanden and sunburst with the sepia wash :)

great to see more fists about!!

  7. I've lifted the recipe from GW. I found that I had to put on a second layer of Iyanden to cover up the wash (since the wash has such a profound effect on the yellow) so Tausept -> Wash -> Iyanden/Golden -> Golden -> a drybrush of Sunburst -> Sunburst highlight (this part I don't find myself to be any good at) works fairly good. Not a bright color but a solid yellow :)
