The future of the fists

List building. It's my latest pastime. I've come to that point where list building is a fun idea. I'm thinking of how to bring my IFs up to let's say 1500 points for instance. Like Chernobyl commented I've been thinking of retiring my captains and replacing them with Lysander for some more punch. Not quite sure what his bolter drill would do for me though. I need to fight something else than other marines, they don't particularly die much when shot by bolters for some reason:)

I was thinking of replacing my underperforming dread with a very close combat styled ironclad dread (think two close combat weapons and two heavy flamers) as well, as that would go well with the captain switching. And to bring it up to 1500, well, terminators *do* sound real nice. But what is best, two squads of five or one squad of ten? With Lysander joining terminators. They are dead 'ard, but they can't be everywhere on the other hand.

I have also started to play around with building lists just for the heck of it. As kind of an exercise to understanding the codex better. Through this I've found that it is very fun to try to think up ways of making themed lists with a certain goal. Like the Raven Guard style list I came up with. I am totally sure that somewhere out there there are someone else already having done this, but the idea of a list totally void of mechanized mayhem appeals to me. I don't want to copy somebody else's winning list, I want to make my own, by being creative. Yes, I've been inspired, and you all have to guess by whom yourself :P

Oh, and that play list? This is it:

Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike 195

Assualt Squad, 5 extra marines, double lightning claws, Melta bomb 225

Assualt Squad, 5 extra marines, double lightning claws, Melta bomb 225

Assualt Squad, 5 extra marines, double lightning claws, Melta bomb 225

Scout Squad, Sniper, camo, 4 extra scouts 154

Scout Squad, Sniper, camo, 4 extra scouts 154

Scout Squad, Combat blade, combi-melta, melta bombs 155

Scout Squad, Combat blade, combi-melta, melta bombs 155

1,488

And with 12p to spare :) Hmm, that is like 14 boxes and one blister. And lots and lots of more painting. I do wonder if such an army is even viable. No reserves, just infiltrate like crazy, go heavy on the sniping and use fleet of foot to get into assault fast.

Bah. I need to play more :)

  1. Eh I gotta tell you im not digging the list man.

Assault squads: You gotta remember that if the tank or what have you is moving and cruising speed you have to roll a 6 to get a hit on the assault which if your opponent has any sense at all he will be moving like that all game long.

Scouts: I dont like thies guys in general unless its one squad with either the spiffy heavy bolter or rocket launcher and Telion

    Just my take on it.

  2. Hehe, it was a pretty extreme experimental list after all. I just got into the whole spirit of list building there and am still in it. It's fun and educational (at least for 40k:)). I did sense that it was weak in mech killing though, and I totally forgot about the moving vehicles problem. Might be something to build a high point list on. I just quite fancied the 30 assault squad marines + Shrike as quite a cool army :)

I'm brewing the idea of a 10 man vanguard squad + double land speeder storms with scouts (one decked out with Telion + heavy bolter, the other fully CC). Multi-melta on the storms. I'll see where that takes me:)

On the Imperial Fists front I am thinking of expanding into Terminator territory. I do want those double lightning claws and why not some hammers too. Dropping the captains for Lysander. The problem is that I would get 0 use of his bolter drill special rule and stubborn feels kind of, well, weak. But he is a proper Imperial Fist on the other hand. I'd throw the termies into a phat land raider together with Lysander and drive a hard wedge into my enemies with that and my two Razorbacks. I wonder if I can get the points in to drop pod my Ironclad Dreadnaught in, as it will be really close combat oriented, or if I can run it over the board. I can keep it back to work as a counter-charge unit though. Hmm, thoughts thoughts :)

  3. Another ability of Lysander is to make one piece of terrain confer a +1 save value ( or is it minus one? which ever is the good one) SO what does this mean? slap a counter into a piece of terrain on your side and put some scouts with camo cloaks on it and watch as your opponent gets really really pissed off.

If you want an "assaulty" army might I suggest Black templars? possibly even more so then blood angels opponents NEVER want to get into an assault with black templars when the emperors champion has the vow that gives them prefered enemy.

  4. He's got Bolster Defenses (Defences for you UK chaps). I had totally missed that! Very nice. Not that I've got any camo wearing sniper scouts in my little IF army. But still, very useful, very interesting. It's amazing the things I miss:) But then again, this seemingly pointless list making gives me a chance to think about "how would I make an army like that?" and maybe learn a thing or two in the process. I'm sure I'm going to face some of those variations in the future:)

In the few games I've played I have faced Black Templars, and lost. Damn they are assaulty in a very killy way. I do have my sights set on the Space Wolves though, which I hope will be very up close and personal as well. I'm thinking of going the Drop Pod way there.

I'm probably going to post a whole bunch of lists from now on, just for the fun of it:) But one thing I really miss already with the Space Marines is a standard Tactical Squad that is assault oriented. Just switch the boltguns for chainswords. My oh my, why can't I get my way in the world of 40k? :) (sure, I could use an Assault Squad without jump packs, but they sorely lack the "scoring unit" part)

  5. Again if you wanted to go for a tactical squad CC unit I must point to Black templars as they can "ork it up" and an entire tactical squad can replace its bolters with a bolt pistol and chain swords. It seems like the Templars might have what you are looking for bud I would recommend taking a look see at the codex. A side note that they are a off branch of the IF so fluff wise you could play them togeather or use non codex specific units togeather

  6. PS: Im looking forward to the lists I hope you dont mind my input.

  7. I think that it is more being reasonably able to counter the templars. Their CC was mean after all.

I'm cooking up a 1500p list for my IF with Lysander and Termies in a Redeemer (7 + Lysander). But I am unsure if a Land Raider or a second Termy squad would be a better deal. I'd go with a shooty second squad with assault cannon(s) or possibly flamers.

Oh and I love me some input :) It's fun thinking of crazy new themed armies, and pitting the options against each other. I'm sure it would fall apart about 1 min after I enter the table, but what the heck, I am sure I am learning something :)

One idea I got was having a Techmarine on a bike with a servo harness zip around the board being a jack of all trades. But that would be in my new special Raven Wing list. Oh what the heck, here it is:

Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike - 195
Vanguard veteran squad, 5 extra marines, sergeant double claws, power weapons, jump packs - 475
    Land Speeder Storm, Multi-melta - 65
    Land Speeder Storm, Multi-melta - 65
Scout Squad, Sniper, camo, 5 extra scouts, 170
Scout Squad, Sniper, camo, 5 extra scouts, 170
Scout Squad, Sergeant Talion + heavy bolter - 135 In a storm
Scout Squad, Combat blades, Sergeant Power Weapon - 105 In a storm
    Techmarine, Combi-Melta, Servo harness, bike - 120

A quite mobile army with two storms and a massive vanguard squad that should chew up enemies in CC. With a techmarine joker. Makes me wonder if I am the first one to cook this up, or if this has been done a million times before:) Well the Storms gotta be pretty new at least:)
